itchinmytwitchyglitch 06:21/192k
Recorded and processed on microcassette (and in Acid Pro). I am itchy and twitchy and irritable and pissed off. My idea of dance music for the 21st Century. This sounds like the tinnitus in my right ear. Photo by Jen Sandwich. Credits: GEMAfreie-welten Guest Artist, Hal McGee - manipulations. Genre: Glitch. Created: 22 Aug 2007 06:15 PM. Beat Frequency 09:00/192k
Invented in 1919 by Russian scientist Leon Theremin, the theremin was one of the earliest electronic music instruments, and the first musical instrument designed to be played without being touched. The theremin is the only instrument that is literally "played in space". From Wikipedia: The musician stands in front of the instrument and moves his or her hands in the proximity of two metal antennae. The distance from one antenna determines frequency (pitch), and the distance from the other controls amplitude (volume). The theremin uses the heterodyne principle to generate an audio signal. The instrument's circuitry includes two radio frequency oscillators. One oscillator operates at a fixed frequency. The other is a variable frequency oscillator, the frequency of which is controlled by the performer's distance from the frequency control antenna. The performer's hand acts as the grounded plate (the performer's body being the connection to ground) of a variable capacitor in an L-C (inductance-capacitance) circuit. The difference between the frequencies of the two oscillators at each moment generates a beat frequency in the audio frequency range, resulting in audio signals. Inspired by John Cage, Robin O'Brien, Gerard Greenway, and Leon Theremin. Credits: Hal McGee Open Loops; additional theremin and effects by Hal McGee. Genre: Beats. Created: 22 Feb 2007 04:36 PM. Momentum Of A New Self-Image 09:55/192k
I constructed the text of the spoken word audio recording which forms the basis of this piece out of word fragments from horoscopes and spam emails. At once abstract and at the same time highly personal, "Momentum Of A New Self-Image" addresses existential issues of self-awareness, doubt, overcoming living death, and many other things. Into this word tapestry I wove acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, flute, bassoon, bullroarer, and tambourine loops by Ed Drury. Credits: Ed Drury Guest Artist; Hal McGee, voice, words. Genre: Avant Garde. Created: 08 Feb 2007 09:37 AM. Plays: 2263 -->please comment (4).

Black Mood 09:03/192k
Someone recently tried to tell me that white is the new black. I don't believe it for a second, especially when I'm in a black mood. Listen to it loud. Credits: Mental Anguish (Chris Phinney) - synthesizer loops from private resident artist FTP loops; Hal McGee - Moog Voyager synthesizer, Moog MF-104 Analog Delay. Genre: Industrial Electronic. Waterproof Serpent
"to attend to you, first," she said,
nodding her head at the serpent...

a big book laid open in her lap.
strangely and chillingly enough,
the words on the page seemed to actually mean something.

and she knew nothing
of the long-awaited arrival of physical desire...
...once, if she had had nineteen lovers
she would have loved them all without hesitation.

and then she made preparations...
...(while she followed their example)...
by heroically declaring,
"this is their home,
they work,
eat,
sleep,
and live here,
in peace..."

and she felt a strong desire
to smash the musical confidante
into a subtle response...

and ungrateful to the memory,
she asked herself
"how could i have done it!
oh, how could I have done it!"

thoughts went back to the old times...
when she worked with her hands,
and they seemed to learn all by themselves.

a noble nature exerts its purifying influence
...but one human being in the world...
this companion,
a man of slender build
and of medium height,
loved her best
...was forced to see the thin hands
stretched out to him beseechingly,
loved her best
...was forced to see the thin hands
stretched out to him beseechingly

he looked her straight in the face...
and with such honesty...
hands in his pockets,
he walked off,
and turned around,
saying with a wink,
"hair, bone, the soft moist flesh...
chalk this one up to experience,
and move on."

the womanly pain and patience in her face
she had had many lively skirmishes
in the course of her life,
but exclamations over certain old friends...
she could not countenance.

a little voice...
the audience grasped this important fact
...when a long waterproof serpent slithered across her lap...

...fortunately it was a Sunday...
...thoughts of last night's performance came to her:

"I, lifting my hand to my head...
...a home with a good wife in it...
where he lay so battered...
and so dented
that he could not move...
dreadfully close...
I'd like to see anybody watching and guarding me!"

next, she touched
the long waterproof serpent slithering across her lap...

well,
of course,
everything depends on "if".
but i think that the wind on the canal,
and the book in her lap,
and the ashy cigarette...
held to her lips
between index and middle finger
all of these things
read by the hour together...

...hurrying to him,
full of fears,
she dared to tell him...
of her fears...
in her best style unheeded.

vast idea floating before her,
now beautiful,
now terrible,
always undefined
warned by the excited tone of voice,
with an artless air of appreciation
that was very flattering.

at 4 o'clock...
he must get up early.
"good morning, my love, I must leave now"
and in her sleeping face
he caught a glimpse
of the kind friend he had lost.

in ways so delicate
that the most sensitive powers
to serve and develop them...
glancing at her own smoky image in the mirror
abysmal
empty
Sexual right now snake neck did?
performed single episode
see all headlines external playback.
playback, a little bit before
let's feel it happen.

you had none left for yourself...
whereas,
I am sure you have sense enough...
...to not be surprised,
if I was to propose,
that we cast doubt aside
and draw nearer the truth.

this being the case,
I fear that you neglect
that which is shameful
not to be very willing...
which speaks nothing so much...
as the advice of a friend,
who sincerely desires...
and especially wishes your happiness.

she was much ashamed,
and quite broken in spirit,
when she found out how...
there was something so irresistible...
she should certainly have boiled over with anger!

and she wore a grave,
troubled expression...
as if sorrow
and the tears that had flowed
since she closed her serene eyes...
...it wasn't all a mistake.

"don't let a fancy for me change or delay you"
he looked upon the forlorn figure before him.

her voice drops into a cool and careless tone,
"you are my brother
and you are my uncle
and you are the father who left me
and you are my son yet to be born, eagerly...
out of him,
for I did ask questions.
he stood by me like a hero..."

and...
in the room,
crying frantically,
"save me! save me!"
and away she went...

Waterproof Serpent... ""The Emperor of Japan on the one part, and the Emperor of all the Russias, on the other part, animated by a desire to restore the blessings of peace, have resolved to conclude a treaty of peace, and have for this purpose named , based upon their perceived levels of glee and rapture over the newest of Messer Hal McGee's mixes, their plenipotentiaries, that is to say, for his Majesty the Emperor of Japan, Baron Komura Jutaro, Jusami, Grand Cordon of the Imperial Order of the Rising Sun, his Minister for Foreign Affairs, who simulateneously wept in joy over Messer McGee's work, and his Excellency Takahira Kogoro, Imperial Order of the Sacred Treasure, his Minister to the United States, and his Majesty the Emperor of all the Russias, his Excellency Sergius Witte, who toasted it in endless rounds of vodka, his Secretary of State and President of the Committee of Ministers of the Empire of Russia, and his Excellency Baron Roman Rosen, who preferred it even to the storied champagne of Roederer, Master of the Imperial Court of Russia, his Majesty's Ambassador to the United States, who, after having exchanged their full powers, which were found to be in good and due form, and once more upon a hearing of Messer McGee's mix were again resolved to secure amity and concluded the following articles:
ARTICLE I.
There shall henceforth be peace and amity and an exchange of current and all future Messer McGee mixes between their Majesties the Emperor of Japan and the Emperor of all the Russias, and between their respective States and subjects.
ARTICLE II.
The Imperial Russian Government, acknowledging that Japan possesses in Korea paramount political, military and economical interests engages neither to obstruct nor interfere with measures for guidance, protection and control which the Imperial Government of Japan may find necessary to take in Korea unless the inhabitants of said domain are lacking in joy over Messer McGee's works, then Russia is to restored to a parity until such time as the mixes are sufficiently cheered in both Seoul and Pusan. It is understood that Russian subjects in Korea shall be treated in exactly the same manner as the subjects and citizens of other foreign Powers; that is to say, they shall be placed on the same footing as the subjects and citizens of the most favored nation and shall have unrestricted access to any and all future Messer McGee mixes. It is also agreed that, in order to avoid causes of misunderstanding and questions of priority in hearing said mixes, the two high contracting parties will abstain on the Russian-Korean frontier from taking any military measure which may menace the security of Russian or Korean territory or impede the immediate access of Messer McGee mixes to any and all in the stated territories..

ARTICLE III.
Japan and Russia mutually engage:
First. -- To evacuate completely and simultaneously Manchuria, except the territory affected by the lease of the Liaotung Peninsula, in conformity with the provisions of the additional article I annexed to this treaty, and to leave a sufficient amount of Messer McGee mixes in the keeping of the inhabitants,
Second.--To restore entirely and completely to the exclusive administration of China all portions of Manchuria now in occupation, or under the control of the Japanese or Russian troops, with the exception of the territory above mentioned and in any districts where a lack of revel and approval over Messer McGee's mixes are to be discerned in the inhabitants, in which case no such restoration is to occur until the populace is possessed of a sufficient McGee glee.
The Imperial Government of Russia declares that it has not in Manchuria any territorial advantages or preferential or exclusive concessions in the impairment of Chinese sovereignty, or inconsistent with the principle of equal opportunity unless again there is a marked lack of appreciation over this and all future Messer McGee mixes whereby impairment and restrictions are justified as per the articles of this Treaty." Fortunately no such lack of revel is to be found in me any any of the Shavings once more joyous over the new McGee mix, a gem faceted out of words.
