itchinmytwitchyglitch 06:21/192k
Recorded and processed on microcassette (and in Acid Pro). I am itchy and twitchy and irritable and pissed off. My idea of dance music for the 21st Century. This sounds like the tinnitus in my right ear. Photo by Jen Sandwich. Credits: GEMAfreie-welten Guest Artist, Hal McGee - manipulations. Genre: Glitch. Created: 22 Aug 2007 06:15 PM. Plays: 997

Beat Frequency 09:00/192k
Invented in 1919 by Russian scientist Leon Theremin, the theremin was one of the earliest electronic music instruments, and the first musical instrument designed to be played without being touched. The theremin is the only instrument that is literally "played in space".
From Wikipedia:
The musician stands in front of the instrument and moves his or her hands in the proximity of two metal antennae. The distance from one antenna determines frequency (pitch), and the distance from the other controls amplitude (volume). The theremin uses the heterodyne principle to generate an audio signal. The instrument's circuitry includes two radio frequency oscillators. One oscillator operates at a fixed frequency. The other is a variable frequency oscillator, the frequency of which is controlled by the performer's distance from the frequency control antenna. The performer's hand acts as the grounded plate (the performer's body being the connection to ground) of a variable capacitor in an L-C (inductance-capacitance) circuit. The difference between the frequencies of the two oscillators at each moment generates a beat frequency in the audio frequency range, resulting in audio signals.
Inspired by John Cage, Robin O'Brien, Gerard Greenway, and Leon Theremin. Credits: Hal McGee Open Loops; additional theremin and effects by Hal McGee. Genre: Beats. Created: 22 Feb 2007 04:36 PM. Plays: 1159

Momentum Of A New Self-Image 09:55/192k
I constructed the text of the spoken word audio recording which forms the basis of this piece out of word fragments from horoscopes and spam emails. At once abstract and at the same time highly personal, "Momentum Of A New Self-Image" addresses existential issues of self-awareness, doubt, overcoming living death, and many other things. Into this word tapestry I wove acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, flute, bassoon, bullroarer, and tambourine loops by Ed Drury. Credits: Ed Drury Guest Artist; Hal McGee, voice, words. Genre: Avant Garde. Created: 08 Feb 2007 09:37 AM. Plays: 2263

Black Mood 09:03/192k
Someone recently tried to tell me that white is the new black. I don't believe it for a second, especially when I'm in a black mood. Listen to it loud. In The House, Gainesville (07:02)
Everything I want is not for free, but it IS usually cheap, plastic, and made in China or Indonesia. It is a great pleasure to once again collaborate with Mike Jackson. We last collaborated in 1991, together with Chris Phinney, on the Ditch album.
Genre: Folk Experimental
Credits: every loop in the Michael Thomas Jackson Guest Artist Loop directory; Hal McGee: mix, tapes, voice; Hal's nephew and niece: voices and $5 KidFun keyboard; art by Marcel Herms
Album: Hal McGee Tapegerm Collection Volume Two

In The House, Gainesville... "You have blended all the loops together into a superb piece of folk experimental. The voices are quite mad which I like a lot & the cheap kid keyboard is like it says FUN !" --Mental Anguish (posted 12/11/05)

In The House, Gainesville... "devoted himself to a military career, disdaining the prerogatives of nobility and sharing the privation and the tumult of the army camp in the midst of the frozen morass of the wilderness, exposed to the arrows of the Franks and the Vandals, fearsome ministers of violence as he ground his own grain into the hardscrabble bread of the soldiers and quaffed the searing local vintage. He rose rapidly in the ranks, attracting the attention of Count Fronto, who recommended his transfer to Rome and the Prefecture of the Praetorians. He led them with distinction, and when the fat and debauched Emperor, rising up out his opulent pool stocked with melons and apples and every variety of young m..by the by, he also considered this latest of Hal's incomprable feats of mixery to be the epitome of greatness. I do agree. Bravo, Hal!" --buzzsaw (posted 12/08/05)
In The House, Gainesville... "Great chaos again Hal. Like the splashing water and the keyboard!" -- (posted 12/08/05)
Its grease was bright as glazed ham
And everywhere that keyboard went
We tasted no-stick Pam
It followed Hal to the store one night
And smashed up all the rules
The store clerk grunted in the dark
And turned on all the tools
So then Mike Jackson smiled and said
“The trash has turned to toys”
Hal whistled anthems of the head
Disturbing girls and boys
