itchinmytwitchyglitch 06:21/192k
Recorded and processed on microcassette (and in Acid Pro). I am itchy and twitchy and irritable and pissed off. My idea of dance music for the 21st Century. This sounds like the tinnitus in my right ear. Photo by Jen Sandwich. Credits: GEMAfreie-welten Guest Artist, Hal McGee - manipulations. Genre: Glitch. Created: 22 Aug 2007 06:15 PM. Plays: 997

Dark Side Of The Sun 09:36/192k

Beat Frequency 09:00/192k
Invented in 1919 by Russian scientist Leon Theremin, the theremin was one of the earliest electronic music instruments, and the first musical instrument designed to be played without being touched. The theremin is the only instrument that is literally "played in space".
From Wikipedia:
The musician stands in front of the instrument and moves his or her hands in the proximity of two metal antennae. The distance from one antenna determines frequency (pitch), and the distance from the other controls amplitude (volume). The theremin uses the heterodyne principle to generate an audio signal. The instrument's circuitry includes two radio frequency oscillators. One oscillator operates at a fixed frequency. The other is a variable frequency oscillator, the frequency of which is controlled by the performer's distance from the frequency control antenna. The performer's hand acts as the grounded plate (the performer's body being the connection to ground) of a variable capacitor in an L-C (inductance-capacitance) circuit. The difference between the frequencies of the two oscillators at each moment generates a beat frequency in the audio frequency range, resulting in audio signals.
Inspired by John Cage, Robin O'Brien, Gerard Greenway, and Leon Theremin. Credits: Hal McGee Open Loops; additional theremin and effects by Hal McGee. Genre: Beats. Created: 22 Feb 2007 04:36 PM. Plays: 1159

Momentum Of A New Self-Image 09:55/192k
I constructed the text of the spoken word audio recording which forms the basis of this piece out of word fragments from horoscopes and spam emails. At once abstract and at the same time highly personal, "Momentum Of A New Self-Image" addresses existential issues of self-awareness, doubt, overcoming living death, and many other things. Into this word tapestry I wove acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, flute, bassoon, bullroarer, and tambourine loops by Ed Drury. Credits: Ed Drury Guest Artist; Hal McGee, voice, words. Genre: Avant Garde. Created: 08 Feb 2007 09:37 AM. Plays: 2263

Black Mood 09:03/192k
Someone recently tried to tell me that white is the new black. I don't believe it for a second, especially when I'm in a black mood. Listen to it loud. Technopolis (10:03)
In one of the past ages of Earth, an immense electronic city called Technopolis covered the entire surface of the planet. Recently, our Tapegerm research team discovered this audio-encoded transmission from the lost city, mysteriously recorded on a previously sealed, un-used magnetic cassette tape.
Genre: Electronic
Credits: More than 80 loops by David Fuglewicz, Mental Anguish, and Hal McGee (Hal McGee Open Loops). Art by Mike Bowman.
Album: Hal McGee Tapegerm Collection Volume One
Label: HalTapes
Technopolis... "Loved it. Absolutely Loved it. " --DJ Fidget (posted 11/09/05)
Technopolis... "Technopolis makes me wanna publicly dance without pants while ranting passages from Brave New World, echo the verbiage of Orwell while seated cross-legged within the hollow core of a genetically engineered super coconut, hum along with the zzzz of an electric razor while being eaten by Ms. Packman, panhandle for microchips in the gutters of South Korea---oh the panning pulses float between skyscrapers of technophrenia! In the end I am left hungry for bowl after steamy bowl of digital dog food." --padukem (posted 11/02/05)
Technopolis... "This transmission showcases the very essence and best of Hal's art. Experimental space excursions make for the heart and soul of his work. Technopolis is classic Hal -that is, yet another slice of cosmic brilliance.
Technopolis... "The blend of origional sounds and loops is almost seamless. This is a well structured, smooth flowing piece of modern psychadelia. Top job." -- (posted 11/01/05)
Technopolis... "a truly epic sound collage! so much to hear! great little storyline too! awesome! " -- (posted 11/01/05)
Technopolis... "Sometimes I refer to large sprawling electronic works like this as "stew". Well, this one is a goulashe filled with steamy treats and unexpected twists of spice. A monumental mix of wild texture and fiber. I am wandering in this "Technopolis" but I am hungry no more." --Don Campau (posted 11/01/05)
Technopolis... "The defiance of Aristarchus' astromonical heliocentric view in the face of Artistotlean earth-centered orthodoxy is captured here in astounding and awe-striking detail, right down to the very newest and latest type of sandal scampering in Agora-filling consternation. Unmistakably a triumph." --buzzsaw (posted 11/01/05)
