Invented in 1919 by Russian scientist Leon Theremin, the theremin was one of the earliest electronic music instruments, and the first musical instrument designed to be played without being touched. The theremin is the only instrument that is literally "played in space".
From Wikipedia:
The musician stands in front of the instrument and moves his or her hands in the proximity of two metal antennae. The distance from one antenna determines frequency (pitch), and the distance from the other controls amplitude (volume). The theremin uses the heterodyne principle to generate an audio signal. The instrument's circuitry includes two radio frequency oscillators. One oscillator operates at a fixed frequency. The other is a variable frequency oscillator, the frequency of which is controlled by the performer's distance from the frequency control antenna. The performer's hand acts as the grounded plate (the performer's body being the connection to ground) of a variable capacitor in an L-C (inductance-capacitance) circuit. The difference between the frequencies of the two oscillators at each moment generates a beat frequency in the audio frequency range, resulting in audio signals.

I constructed the text of the spoken word audio recording which forms the basis of this piece out of word fragments from horoscopes and spam emails. At once abstract and at the same time highly personal, "Momentum Of A New Self-Image" addresses existential issues of self-awareness, doubt, overcoming living death, and many other things. Currently I am curating the Contact Compilation Project, which will consist of nine online compilations of 60 one-minute tracks by international audio artists who are members of the Contact Group Of Experimental Electronic Music and Noise on Facebook.
I have been creating my own homemade experimental electronic music since 1981. I was heavily involved in the early days of the homemade music Cassette Culture movement in the 1980s, and was one of the movement's original and prime motivators, organizers, and promoters.
Debbie Jaffe and I operated the Cause And Effect cassette distribution service and label in the mid 1980s, and we sold and distributed 5,000 cassettes in three years. We released cassettes by Merzbow, Nurse With Wound, Haters, Borbetomagus, Controlled Bleeding, Robert Rich, DDAA, Blackhouse, Pacific 231, Human Flesh, F/i, If Bwana, Algebra Suicide, Jabon, Psyclones, Monochrome Bleu, Vox Populi!, and Master/Slave Relationship. I also produced several notable compilations on the label. In the mid 1980s I recorded numerous works as a member of Viscera, solo as Dog As Master, and in collaboration with If, Bwana and Jabon.
In the late 1980s and early 90s I published Electronic Cottage Magazine, operated the Electronic Cottage label, and collaborated extensively with Chris Phinney, NOMUZIC, and David Prescott, as well as produced three compilations.
In the mid to late 1990s I released dozens of cassettes of homemade experimental music solo and in collaboration with Jeph Jerman, Brian Noring (EHI), Big City Orchestra, David Wright, L.G. Mair, Emil Hagstrom (**** ESP), Keith Nicolay, Charles Rice Goff III, Bret Hart, Homogenized Terrestrials, and If, Bwana. In 1998 I produced the Tape Heads Cassette Compilation Project, which consisted of eight 90-minute volumes.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s I turned my attention to the production of homemade CDR releases, and collaborated heavily in person and via mail collaboration, with Brian Noring, Chris Phinney, Dave Fuglewicz, Don Campau, Rick Franecki, Charles Goff, Bret Hart, Homogenized Terrestrials, Noring, and Albert Casais.. During this time I recorded several albums of cassette tape collage works, most notably Wired For Sound, Maps Of Nowhere, and the My Intellectual Property trilogy. In 2003-04 I produced the five-volume Quotidian Assemblages compilation project, and later, two volumes of a multi-collaborative compilation nature, Collage Mania. In 2005 I recorded and released a 2-hour video film called The Secret Life Of Hal McGee.
In 2005 I took my first steps toward distributing my music online by joining the Tapegerm Collective, which is a collaborative loop-based community.
In 2006, I began performing live for the first time since 1987, and I became involved in Florida's burgeoning, highly active Noise and experimental music scene. Since then I have performed more than 100 times.
I have curated four Laboratory Music Improvisation Festivals and 13 Apartment Music shows (hosted in my apartment in Gainesville, Florida).
