In Versailles, after a night's lengthy inner struggle over the white flag of the Bourbons and after several attempts to escape the tricolour flag of Revolution through a loop of negociation and a fold of fabric and refusing to make the flag a two-sided affair, the Duke decides not to make his appearance in Paris and in the Chamber, drops the white flag of the Bourbons and picks up instead the white flag of surrender. It will be a republic and strudel in the Alps after all.
